About Armadillo
Armadillo is a fair trade and ethical enterprise dedicated to creating positive change for both the Kichwa artisans of Ecuador and conscious clients around the world. By connecting these two communities, Armadillo Stores helps preserve a rich cultural heritage and an ancestral craft that is at risk of disappearing.
Our handwoven products are made using intricate techniques passed down through generations. Every step of the process—from sourcing raw materials to weaving the final pieces—is local, sustainable, and rooted in centuries-old tradition. The craft of weaving shigras, once widely practiced, is now nearly extinct due to the complexity, time commitment, and historically unfair compensation associated with the process.
We work directly with Kichwa weavers to ensure they are fairly compensated and supported. Through our quality and design improvement programs, we focus on preserving endangered techniques and reviving traditional patterns.
Historically, shigras have been used by women in the mountains and jungle to carry food or seeds into the fields. On the Day of the Dead, it is customary to visit cemeteries with shigras filled with food as a way of honoring ancestors.
The bags are made from the cabuya plant—also known as fique, penco, or agave. The specific variety we use is endemic to Ecuador. The crafting process is labor-intensive: the plant fibers are pounded, fermented, washed, shredded, boiled, dyed, dried, and finally handwoven with a fine needle. Weaving a single piece can take up to 16 weeks and involves a high degree of creativity.
Our artisans live in remote areas at elevations of up to 4,500 meters, often without electricity and in traditional straw huts where they cook over open fires. Despite the challenges, they maintain a strong sense of community and uphold deep-rooted values passed from generation to generation.
